For this project I used Holbein paint, diluted 50/50 with water
(working on 14"x17" Bristol board).
My reference photo is large enough to give me good details
and even if I was painting in colour,
the black and white photo helps me achieve good tonal values.
I learned much of the process for this project from Steve Driscoll's Instructional DVD
and with instruction from my friend, artist Luc Boivin.

ANOTHER AIRBRUSH HOW-TO PRESENTED BY
Josee Trinci of Quebec Canada,
attempts to fool us into believing she is a novice airbrusher.
The quality of her work reveals just the opposite!
Her English language skills may be lacking in some areas,
but her artistic talents are obviously not!
Once I have the basic sketch in place, I start with the Iris.
I will be using an "eraser" to remove light layers of paint.
(Any type of eraser that suits your preference)
I use light coats of circular shading and radiating lines,
erasing after each coat to simulate the different colour lines within the Iris.
What you erased stays lighter with the each coat
and what isn't erased becomes darker, and so on.
I also worked on the pupil at the same time making it as dark as possible

At this point I start laying in the general form and shape of the upper lids,
using light coats of paint to build slowly.
When I'm satisfied with how the upper lid looks,
I start the lower part of the eye...
again, I am only building the general shape and form,
I will be back to this area later to detail and finish the artwork.
When I'm satisfied with the whole area around the eye,
I spray, lightly, the eyebrow and some shadows on the eyelid
At this point I add details and folds to the eyelid.
Here I added the white highlight spot to the eye.
Using an exacto knife (with the rounded blade)
and holding it side ways,
I start scratching the top of the eyelid
and using the electric eraser in some spots
to create some of the more distinct ridge highlights within the eyelid.
I also used my electric eraser to clean up the white area of the eyeball
and add more highlighted areas to the lids.
Strengthen the eyebrow with some more shading,
and then I used a fine paint brush (with diluted paint)
to create the distinct eyebrow hairs.
To create the fine eyelashes, I traced my eye onto some tracing paper...
then drew in my lashes until I was happy with the placement.
Now turn over the tracing paper and resketch the final eyelash placement.
When I place the paper back over my painting and redraw the lashes one more time,
the pencil design will be transferred to my work surface.
Then using a fine paint brush with diluted paint,
I carefully follow the line transfers and paint in the eyelashes.
To create light coloured lashes or highlight edges to the lashes, scrape with an exacto knife.
Voila!
